What is LED Hard Light Bar?

LED hard light bars are one of the most established and effective pieces of equipment to fit onto an emergency vehicle for the purposes of warning drivers of hazards on the road. For both indicating potential road hazards and indicating a need for drivers to make way, they allow emergency vehicles to respond to incidents as quickly and safely as possible. When you’re fitting emergency lights and the police light bar to a vehicle that you operate, you want to make sure that you invest in lights that meet your needs. You also want to ensure you’re getting lights with the functions that are going to help you.

How Does an LED Hard Light Bar Work?

An LED light bar consists of a series of LEDs arranged in a row or a grid on a circuit board. The LEDs are connected to a power source, such as a battery or the vehicle's electrical system, through wires or connectors. The power source provides the current that flows through the LEDs and makes them light up. Depending on the model and features of the LED light bar, it may also have other components, such as a switch, a dimmer, a controller, or a relay. These components allow you to turn the light bar on and off, adjust its brightness or color, change its pattern or mode, or synchronize it with other lights.

Some LED light bars also have lenses or reflectors that help focus or spread the light beam. This can affect the intensity and angle of the light output. For example, some light bars have spot beams that produce a narrow and concentrated beam of light for long-distance visibility. Others have flood beams that produce a wide and diffuse beam of light for short-range illumination. Some light bars have both spot and flood beams, or even combo beams that combine different patterns.

Types of LED Light Bars

Mini Light Bar
These small light bars have up to 8-10 LEDs and are used to complement other lighting on the truck, such as spotlights or portable work lights.

Slim Light Bar
These are the most common Light bars on the road. Slim light bars are less than 1 row and are usually attached to the truck's grille to provide some additional forward lighting.

Full-Size/Off-Road Light Bar
This category is where the interesting features come in. Full-size light bars, with two or even three rows of LEDs, can be more than 20 inches long and can be installed anywhere a large amount of Light is needed. These products feature the highest weatherproof and lighting standards, designed to keep you safe in challenging off-road situations.

Housing and Construction
It’s important for an emergency LED Light Bar to have its constituent components shielded within robust housing. This must also be impervious to light debris (such as snow or hale) as well as weatherproof. It must also be totally transparent in order to ensure maximum brightness is achieved. There are two materials commonly used for LED Light Bar housing, and those are Aluminum and Polycarbonate.

LED Light Housings
Polycarbonate LED light housings allow for a crystal clear transmission of the light therein, and permits each individual LED to boast its own housing and protective shell. The thin diffusion lenses again allow for 90% clarity and purity provided you purchase brand new. Polycarbonate is also easily shaped and undergoes that adaptive process while losing little of its overall strength, meaning that it can be utilized for a wide and complex array of potential lighting solutions.

Circuit Board Wiring
In many full size 12v light bars, the circuit is linear with end-to-end connections allowing for cathodes and anodes to take a fairly chronological and easily-followed length along the bar. This can be a convenience for many hoping to repair or perhaps consider the maintenance of their own light bars. Of course, this usually means that depending on the voltage of the LED bars, the amount of voltage supply needed to keep the entire length of the LED strips powered will be a simple formula to follow. For the most part, and despite rarely being labelled, the cathode points vertically into bulb and the anode will point horizontally.

Mounts For Your Lightbar
Hard mounts are protected bracket clamps, surface mount brackets and internal mounts that are clamped, screwed or hooked into a certain platform, allowing for a fixed degree of control. This can take a little time to adjust or replace or remove, but hard mounts can often be a great means of guaranteeing further stability, especially when used on a police led light bar. Mini light bars or light bars that have a range of practical versatile uses may enjoy convenient installation via magnetic mounts. Magnetic mounts, you guessed it, allow for the magnetized connection of a light bar to your vehicle.

Factors to Consider When Buying an LED Light Bar

Which Size to Buy
The length of light bars varies hugely from less than 10 inches to more than 50 inches, so it’s wise to consider which size would suit your needs best. Mini LED light bars are ideal for those who only need a light bar occasionally while full size light bars are suited to larger vehicles and professionals who require the most powerful light source. When choosing a new LED light bar, consider the size of the vehicle, the role of the vehicle and the power output. Mini light bars are more flexible and they travel wherever you do, while full-size light bars are ideal for vehicles that are in constant or frequent use.

Interior VS. Exterior
Exterior light bars are ideally suited to larger emergency vehicles and construction and tow trucks. If you use a light bar as a warning or to light the way for other vehicles as primary functions, it’s likely that external light bars will be a better choice for you. Interior light bars, which can be fitted to the dash, can be installed quickly and very simply and they are fantastic for volunteer first responders and police vehicles, which need to operate discreetly until the time is right to flick the lights on and take action. Exterior lights are also more appropriate in scenarios when the function and type of vehicle needs to be made clear to other road users, for example, a tow truck traveling down the highway to recover a vehicle.

Beam Angle
Different types of beam are suited to different scenarios. Some LED light bars offer both flood and spot lighting, but not all do. Spot beams are ideal for driving in the dark, while floodlights are suited to construction or accident sites when you need to illuminate a certain area. If your work is varied, a bar that boasts both capabilities may be the best option.

Curved Light Bar vs Straight Light Bar

The first thing you will probably notice is that most of the compatibles are the same. The lengths of both are usually the same, light output (lumens). They use the same mounting brackets etc. So with all of that being the same what is the difference? There are two main things, the beam pattern and appearance when mounting.

Beam Pattern

When you get a straight light bar you probably see, a spot light, flood light or combo beam patterns. This is just referring to how the light housing direct the light. With a beam pattern the light bar will concentrate the light more towards a single point giving you a smaller field of view but better illuminating the smaller area. The flood beam will do just the opposite of the spot light; it will disperse the light in a wider area allowing you to see more but it will not have the concentrated light in as small an area.

With a curved light bar, you will still be able to get the same combo patterns with the same basic idea behind it but this will disperse the light even wider. The curved light bar will give you the widest field of view, allowing you to illuminate the largest area possible.

Mounting

The other main difference is how these look when they are installed on your vehicle. The real benefit of the curved light bar is it will fit the curvature in most vehicles nicely. They match up almost exactly to the curve of the bumper if you want to mount it low. If you are looking at mounting it to the top of your vehicle the curved will also match up nicely with most windshields.

If you have a squarer vehicle like a Jeep this is where the straight light bars really......shine. Astatically the boxier vehicles look better with the straight light bars. Since there are not a lot of curves on those vehicles the straight bars look and fit the best.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to LED Hard Light Bar

Q: What are LED light bars used for?

A: Light bar systems are useful for so many different activities like off-roading, hunting, outdoor work, or just driving down a poorly illuminated road.

Q: What is the difference between LED strip and LED bar?

A: Light Bars are regulated current with buck/boost a regulator. LED strips are not regulated but use passive series current limiting resistors. This permits strips to operate from 10 to 14.2V which affects brightness or 2x this for 24V strings.

Q: What is the difference between LED light bar and pods?

A: The lightbar will offer a wider spread of light. The pods are usually used as ditch lights for maneuvering over obstacles in the dark. A common con of a roof mounted light bar is glare off the hood. You may need to apply a flat colored hood decal to alleviate that.

Q: What makes a good LED light bar?

A: Here's what makes an LED light bar the best: It comes from a real company, not just someone making a quick buck through Amazon. The materials and construction are super durable. Installation is as straightforward as you think it ought to be.

Q: What are the different types of light bars?

A: Light bars can come in five beam patterns: Driving, scene, combo, flood, and spot. While all of these patterns have practical uses, the most popular are flood and spot. This combination offers the best mix of breadth and distance. These beam types are measured by degrees, and some include a level of adjustability.

Q: Do I need an LED light bar?

A: For most vehicle owners, the answer will be yes. Whether you're buying the LED light bar for emergency matters or other activities that require a strobe light bar for truck, this addition can make a serious impact.

Q: How do I choose a LED light bar?

A: When choosing a new LED light bar, consider the size of the vehicle, the role of the vehicle and the power output. Mini light bars are more flexible and they travel wherever you do, while full-size light bars are ideal for vehicles that are in constant or frequent use.

Q: What are the 2 types of LED light strips?

A: Colors across the entire visible spectrum are available - violet, blue, green, amber, red - and even ultraviolet or infrared. There are two primary types of colored LED strip: fixed single color, and color changing.

Q: Do LED light bars draw a lot of power?

A: The reason is that LED lights are commonly specified in “watt equivalent”, i.e. your light bar produces as much light as a 120 watt incandescent non-halogen light. LEDs use about one-fifth the power for the same amount of light output.

Q: How many watts is a good LED light bar?

A: LED light bars need to consider a few different things. The basic 22-inch light bar must have at least 120 watts of power. However, 240 watts may be best for many situations. You are free to choose up to 800 watts or more if you wish.

Q: How long do LED light bars last?

A: Length - With an average lifespan of up to 40,000 hours, there's a good chance that the bulbs in your mount will outlive your vehicle. Durability - LED circuit boards are not susceptible to damage caused by vibrations or impact, making them an excellent choice for the bumpiness and unpredictability of off-roading.

Q: Why is my LED light bar not bright?

A: Check the voltage of your vehicle's battery: Generally, this can occur due to low voltage. Going below what the light requires will either dim the brightness of the light or you will see an alternating pattern with the LEDs. This can sometimes be solved by charging or replacing the battery.

Q: How can you tell if an LED light is good quality?

A: If the brightness is quite reliable, the LED lights are high-quality and have a long lifespan. The temperature of good LED light bar changed little in normal working. If there is a very high temperature and uneven heating, the LED lights will be easy to broken and the lifespan will be very short.

Q: Are all light bars the same?

A: Even though many light bars will be made of aluminum, not all varieties are made equal. 6061 aluminum is always a good choice. You can also look for light bars made with 6063 aluminum, an alloy that is even more durable and corrosion-resistant.

Q: What is the voltage range of LED light bars?

A: Virtually all LED light bars are designed to run off of a standard 12 or 24-volt electrical system. You will commonly see a range of working voltage similar to '9-32V' - this essentially means the product will operate from 9 - 36 volts.

Q: Are LED light bars safe?

A: LED light bars provide bright, direct light. For those who frequently off-road, the extra visibility improves safety. While light bars are encouraged while driving off-road, it's dangerous to use them on public roads.

Q: Do LED light bars produce heat?

A: Since LED lights don't produce heat, they don't require the same level of cleaning as traditional incandescent bulbs.

Q: Why do LED light bars have relays?

A: A light bar can draw a lot of current, especially if it has multiple LEDs. If you wire it directly to your switch, you might overload the switch and the wiring, causing them to melt or catch fire. A relay can handle high currents safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of electrical problems.

Q: What does the wattage mean on a LED light bar?

A: This measures how much power is required to run the light bar, measured in watts. Higher wattage light bars work fine if your vehicle is running, but you will need to limit your usage with the vehicle off to avoid draining your battery.

Q: What is a good size light bar?

A: It provides maximum brightness and is ideal for use on larger vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs. A 40 inch LED light bar can produce a wide beam of light that can reach up to 180 degrees, providing maximum visibility in low-light conditions.

Q: How are LED light bars measured?

A: The brightness of an LED light bar is typically measured in lumens, which is a unit of measurement for the total amount of visible light emitted by the LED. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. For most off-roading situations, a light bar with 10,000 to 15,000 lumens should provide plenty of illumination.

Q: How bright is a 300 watt LED light bar?

A: The 300w LED light is manufactured to produce light intensity around 40,000 lumens. The light produced from these lumens can be 5000K pure white or 3000K warm white which is a yellow brownish color.

Q: How long will a LED light bar last on a 12V battery?

A: So for your case, solve for amps (power of your light bar / voltage): 72 watts / 12 volts = 6 amps. This battery claims 11000 mAh, which is 11 Ah (Amp * hours). So you can estimate 11 Ah / 6 Amps (from the first equation) and get 1.83 hours. So, I'd round down a little and go for 1.5 hours.

Q: How many amps does LED light bar use?

A: How many amps does a 120-watt light bar consume? To get that number, you need to divide the wattage by the voltage. For example, 120 watts divided by 12 volts gives 10 amps. If you plug the light bar into the VAC, you divide 120 by 120 to get 1 amp.

Q: How many lumen is a good light bar?

A: LED light bar having the right amount of lumens that illuminate to do your work. The lumen output for the lightbar will be from 6500 - 24000 lm. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light, in which the highest one will make your night as day.
